Rat Dissection

Last week week on Thursday and Friday our Bio class got to dissect a rat that filled the room with a vulgar scent. We were assigned into groups of four, each with a specific role to fulfill. My group nominated Doug to be the 'surgeon' as we all didnt't want to deal with the crude looking creature. Since we are learning about vertebrates in class we were able to have a kinthestetic experience to further understand the ways of this Subphlum, Vertebrata. The goals of this hands on lab was to experience the internal and external structures of this animal. Some interesting facts about rats are most are nocturnal meaning they usually come out at night and sleep during the day. Rats actually are very smart and maintain a good memory. They can squeeze into a hole the size of a quarter and theyuse their tail for balance and to their regulate body temperature. I love dissecting! It's my favourite way to learn.

1. Hands are the best dissecting tool because they allow us to maintain accuracy and control throughout the lab. They are made to handle things delicatly and can help make precise cuts.

2.The purpose of labels and titles when disecting is to help us get a better understanding of where everything is located and what it looks like.

3. The rat tail is different from the rest of the body because it is only used for balance, sense and maintaining body temperature.

4. The Vibrass have no nerves and are used for tactile sensation.

5. The property of being divisible into symmetrical halves on either side of a single plain. Another example: Humans

PART B:

1.The sphincter is said to be circular so that liquidy substances are able to pass through, it then regulates the passage of these fluids.

2.Yes there is a difference between the large intestine and the small intestine. The small intestine is more slim and coiled tube which recieves partial broken down food from the stomach. The small intestine is actually longer than the large intestine, just smaller in width. The large intestine contains 5 sections and here is where the complete stages of digestion occur.
3. The liver produces bile which helps digest fat. It also transforms wastes into less harmful substances.

4. The name "duodenum" is from the latin name "duodenum digitaum" meaning 12 fingers breadth.

5. The purpose of the appendix is to protect your gut from germs due to its rich supply in immunity cells.

PART C:

2. The spleen is associated with the circulatory system and functions in the destructions of blood cells and blood sorage.

3. The diaphram is associated with breathing in. It's layer of muscle that seperates the thorocic from the abdominal cavity.

4. Atria: Chamber of the heart that receives incoming blood
Ventricles: Muscular chamberthat pummps blood out of the heart.

6. The left ventricle is thicker than the right beause it pumps the blood at higher pressure. the left ventricle goes to all areas of the body where the right ony has to pump blood to the lungs which is a shorter distance, requiring less pressure.

6. In the male and female reproductive system their adrenal filand kidneys are both identical and connect to their bodies.

7.The rat's kidney excretes wastes and regulates their water blance.

8. The throid , thymus and adernal glands are found in the endocrine system, the glands in the endocrine system influences in regulating mood, growth and development.
